Adrian Campbell-Smith climbed onto the top step of the Ginetta GT5 Challenge podium for the fifth time so far this season at Silverstone this past weekend (09/10 June) as he tasted further AM class success with W2R Motorsport.
The team’s GT5 Challenge contenders, Campbell-Smith, Brett Ward and Will Dyrdal would be part of a mammoth grid of over fifty cars as they shared a grid with the Ginetta G40 Cup to tackle the 3.66 mile Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.
Adrian Campbell-Smith produced another fantastic display in the AM category. Immediately on the front-running pace once again in free practice, the reigning champion would put himself firmly in podium contention by qualifying third on the grid.
A brilliant performance in race one saw him fight through to a fifth class victory of the season so far and he was on course for another great result in race two, however on the last lap he would unfortunately be caught up in a large incident that ended his race on the spot.
Brett Ward put in his best display of his maiden Challenge campaign so far, with a sensational qualifying performance seeing the former World Champion karter qualifying third on the grid in only his fourth ever car-racing meeting.
While the opening race unfortunately didn’t go his way as he got shuffled down the field to ninteenth, the twenty year old produced a brilliant comeback drive in race two to record a maiden top ten finish.
In his second meeting with the W2R Motorsport team, teenage talent Will Dyrdal produced another strong display to take a fourth top ten finish of the season with ninth, before unfortunately slipping back to eighteenth in race two.
W2R Motorsport’s Ben Hyland: “This was by far the biggest weekend for W2R Motorsport so far with nine cars racing in three championships, but it came together superbly and that shows the strength in the team; every member did an amazing job and ten podium finishes are a testament to that.
“Adrian is driving at the top of his game this season and his performance in both races was brilliant, showing great speed and pulling off some stunning overtaking moves. The win was superb and it’s just a shame he got caught up in a big incident in race two – the most important thing is he came away unscathed and in good spirits.
“Brett did exactly what we knew all along he could do and he produced a top quality performance in qualifying against a really competitive field. He’s drove really well in every session and while he had some bad luck in the races, it’s still been a big, confidence-boosting weekend.
“It was a frustrating weekend for Will sadly as he had to battle with some older tyres compared to the drivers around him. He did a good job overall in the circumstances though and definitely deserved his top ten finish in race one.
“With both Pro drivers finishing in the top ten and Adrian getting on the top step of the podium, we’re happy with our weekend overall and now head to Spa-Francorchamps in positive spirits as we feel it’s a circuit that all three drivers can shine at.”
