W2R Motorsport have ended the 2018 Ginetta Racing Drivers Club season with a perfect record courtesy of a sensational double win for new champion James Crawshaw at Brands Hatch on Saturday (4th August).
Crawshaw’s two victories around the world famous Grand Prix circuit in Kent ensures he wins the title at the end of an incredible first season in car-racing, with seven race victories from eight races over the campaign.
The other success went the way of Crawshaw’s team-mate Stephen Docker, who finishes second in the standings after he took a pair of top three finishes at Brands Hatch, which ensures that both drivers sensationally end the season with 100% podium records.
2018 want2race competition winner Crawshaw led the way in qualifying by less than two tenths of a second over his team-mate, which means that the duo complete the campaign with a pair of pole positions apiece.
Crawshaw went on to overcome extremely hot conditions and an early safety car period to produce a lights to flag victory in the first race, while Docker followed him home to take second place just over a second adrift at the chequered flag.
The 28 year old would go on to cap off his title-winning campaign in perfect fashion as he romped to a dominant nine second win, while Docker finished third following some thrilling wheel-to-wheel racing with Chris Salkeld.
The W2R Motorsport entry was boosted for the season finale by the addition of Roy Alderslade, who produced an impressive performance across the meeting on his first outing with the team, starting by qualifying a strong sixth overall.
The Essex-based racer produced a fantastic display in the opening race as he worked his way through to a season’s best fourth place finish, which he followed up with another top five result in race two to cap off a great day of racing.
W2R Motorsport’s Ben Hyland said: “We’re absolutely over the moon. James [Crawshaw] produced an emphatic end to the season. He showed incredible pace, was clever in the races to get the gaps and control them from there. It was never in doubt.
“Barring an issue at Snetterton that forced him to come from the back of the grid to second place, he would have taken a clean sweep of race wins in the most competitive GRDC season so far, which is truly remarkable to me.
“Stephen [Docker] ended his season with another fantastic performance and his drive in race two was arguably his best of the year as he battled with Chris [Salkeld], showing a lot of respect and great pace to end the year with a fastest lap.
“It’s been a brilliant season for Stephen as well, and I truly feel we’ve found two real gems with the want2race competition. Both drivers have exciting futures ahead of them and they’re both brilliant advocates for the W2R Motorsport team.
“It was brilliant to welcome Roy [Alderslade] to the team this weekend. He’s shown some big development in testing with us and it showed this weekend as he came away with a richly deserved best finish of the campaign.
“It’s been a joy for the team to support our drivers in GRDC this season, and we must say thank you to the rest of the grid for a great atmosphere around the paddock. We couldn’t be happier with how the season has gone and we’ve got some exciting news on 2019 to come for all three drivers.”
