Rockingham played host to rounds 4, 5 and 6 of the Ginetta GT5 Challenge – this time for GRDC+ race cars exclusively. After mixed fortunes at Brands Hatch rounds, the team had the cars all back to their former glory and set up for the challenging part oval circuit of Rockingham Speedway.
With Adrian Campbell-Smith coming into the weekend in second place in the GRDC+ Championship, W2R team-mates Elliker, Jarvis and newcomers Oliphant and Bengis were looking to him to lead by example.
Qualifying ended up being a ‘one hit wonder’ with those drivers top of the order who could push right from the pit exit, after lap one the rain fell heavily and the order was decided. Topping the Team W2R order was Richard Elliker, with P4 just 7 tenths off the pole sitting Evans. Campbell-Smith, Elliker and Olipant all qualified together with P6, 7 and 8 on the grid all reserved for the want2race entourage. David Bengis qualified well in P15 from 22, in his first race outing in the G40 since moving from the Caterham Academy.
Race 1 was action packed from the get go, with an incident at Deene hairpin resulting in Smith and Evans dropping down the order. Paul Oliphant had a tremendous race, finishing P6 overall where he would start the second race. Campbell-Smith was a man on the move, up to the top 4 but then got caught by Marshall fluffing gears on the main straight and resulting in having to pit for temporary repairs to get to the end of the race. Richard Elliker was star of the W2R show, with a fine drive to third position and a podium celebration – just deserves after a particularly difficult opening round at Brands.
Race 2 was all about Campbell-Smith and his progression from P20 on the grid, a fine fight through the field placed Adrian P6 as they crossed the chequered flag. Jarvis, Elliker and Oliphant were all placed around mid-pack, with the reverse grid for Race 3 looking interesting as this would place Elliker P1 and Jarvis P2 – nervous times for the drivers as they would experience the sharp end of the grid for the very first time.
A fantastic drive from all the team in Race 3 resulted in more trophy ware, with the #16 car of Campbell-Smith leading the race for some of the way, just not quite being able to hold on – dropping to a more than respectful P3 at the end. Mike Jarvis had his best drive of the weekend, showing superb race pace and overtaking moves as he finished a season best P6. David Bengis in the #72 car also had a great final race at Rockingham, finishing P14 from last on the grid.
We look forward to Silverstone on June 11/12 for Rounds 7,8 and 9 of the Championship.
