Circuit History

A relatively new track, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve—more commonly referred to as the Portimão race circuit—was originally conceived by engineer, Paulo Pinheiro in 2002, with the hopes of landing a Formula 1 Grand Prix. However, financial hurdles meant the original projection would go on to be set back by some time. In the interim, it would receive a number of backers, including Parkalgar, who would go on to be the track’s in-house racing brand and headed up by Pinheiro himself.

With the help of Parkalgar, the circuit was eventually launched in 2008, showcasing a modern, mixed-speed layout and an unprecedented number of elevation changes, giving it the notable rollercoaster reputation it is now known for. The full complex itself is a huge operation: more of a resort than just a racing circuit, with all the hospitality of a five-star hotel and a 100,000-spectator capacity, including a VIP tower with 15,000 seats.

Upon its launch, it quickly secured a round in the World Superbike Championships, with the Parkalgar Honda World Supersport team making its competitive debut. Not long after, the track got its first taste of F1 action through winter testing, with a variety of teams taking to the track.

Since then, the Portimão circuit has gone on to add a number of dates to its racing calendar, including the Maxi Endurance 32-hour race, the longest continuous race in the world. After over £180 million spent to bring this circuit to life, it remains Portugal’s premium racetrack and widely used across a variety of disciplines.
